ABOUT

  • Objektiv Press was founded in 2009 by Nina Strand as an independent, artist-run initiative dedicated to lens-based art. It began as a bi-annual journal, with Ida Kierulf and Susanne Østby Sæther joining Strand on the original editorial board. In 2016, Lucas Blalock and Brian Sholis joined the editorial group, further shaping Objektiv’s direction. Over the years, the initiative has also been enriched by a wide network of writers, artists, and art historians who have contributed to its evolving perspective.

Since 2020, Objektiv Press has focused on publishing essays on lens-based art, alongside the Afterimage series featured in our web journal. The essay series is distributed through Antenne Books.

  • In 2020, Objektiv Press initiated a new series of works, Visual Wanderings, made especially for our online journal. We invited photographers from all over the world to create art that responded to the new situation: what does the lock-down mean for their work, what is important for them to convey, and what are their reflections on the time to come? Each photographer was asked to pick another artist to create a work and in this way, we created a visual dialogue in order to get a bigger picture of the pandemic. See some of the contributions here.

The series was supported by Fritt Ord and Bergesenstiftelsen.

  • From 2010 to 2020, Objektiv Press published a biannual journal that went on to become one of the leading publications in the field of contemporary photography. Exploring a wide range of themes, from materiality to post-photography, the journal was first published in Norwegian before transitioning to English after five years, thereby expanding its global reach.
